The former Pioneer Chapel, Poowong is now closed, and the property was sold in 1981. It was the first permanent building in the Shire, opened on 3/11/1878 as the Poowong Wesleyan Church. For a period from 1878 it was also used as a school and by the Anglican Church for services until their building was opened on 11/7/1884. Alterations and additions were made during 1890/91 and the building was re-opened on 21/11/1891. The original building was destroyed by a bushfire on 1/2/1898, but was rebuilt and opened on 12/6/1898. No other details are known. More historical information/photographs of the former church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 8/3/2020.
