St Matthew's Church of England was erected on this site in 1903. It was built by a small, but determined, congregation of Olinda Pioneers. Prior to the church being built worship services were held in the home of settlers Mr & Mrs John Thomas. The church was dedicated by Archdeacon A W Handley on 9/7/1903.

The Parish had its first resident Vicar in 1931 after the construction of a Vicagage.

St Matthew's Church Hall was previously the Mernda Methodist Church. Mernda was was the name given to the area between Olinda and Monbulk. The name Mernda was dropped as it was an established name elsewhere. The Mernda Methodist Church was ereced in 1901, on land donated by Mrs Mary Ann Warner, an untrained nurse and midwife. By the late 1920's a decision was made to build a new and larger Methodist Church in the Olinda Township. The old church was closed. In 1935 St Matthew's which also needed additional space purchased the old Methodist Church Building and had it moved by horse and dray to its present site alongside St Matthew's Church. The hall is the oldest church building in the hills.

More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 13/5/2017.
