The Habitat Uniting Church, Canterbury is part of the Yarra Yarra Presbytery and the Uniting Church Synod of Victoria & Tasmania. Early Methodist services in the area began in a wooden building at the cnr Sackviile Strret & Balmoral Avenue, Kew in 1889. The building was later relocated to the present site and recommenced services on 3/3/1908. It was enlarged three years later and continued to be used as a Sunday School when the present church building was opened in 1926. The wooden Sunday School hall was replaced by a new complex in 1957, to meet the needs of the large number of children. At Union in 1977 the church was known as the Burke Road, Balwyn Methodist Church, but changed its name to the St David's Uniting Church in the 1980s. With declining congregations and buildings needing to be upgraded it was determined in 2008 the St David's and Augustine Hawthorn Uniting churches would work together. Accordingly, The Augustine Centre (2 Minona St., Hawthorn) combined with St David's in 2009, to form the Habitat Uniting Church. The Kew Uniting Church joined Habitat in 2013 [Sourced from: https://www.habitatforspirituality.org.au/about/history]. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited.
