A plaque records: The Scots Church - The first service was held in April 1838 - The Rev James Forbes officiated in temporary premises on this site from 1838 to 1841 when the first church was erected. - In 1873 the Foundation Stone of this building was laid.

The Scots' Church, Melbourne is part of the Presbytery of Melbourne West. The present church building was opened on 29/11/1874. It replaced an earlier church/school erected on the same site, and opened on 3/10/1841. The first minister was the Rev James Forbes, who after arriving from Scotland held his first service on 3/2/1838, in a temporary wooden building at the west end of Collins Street. This was the first Presbyterian Church erected in the Port Philip District (state of Victoria). More historical information/photographs of the church/congegation are invited.
