A plaque records:

  • Doncaster - Church of Christ - In the 1850s and 1860s, the well established Catholic, Anglican, and Protestant denominations usually received government land grants in exclusive locations for their churches. The newer Church of Christ had to buy its own land. It built churches in local shopping centres close to the daily life of the general community.
  • In 1889 Doncaster Church of Christ featured a gabled porch, slate roof and pointed arched windows. It was a lively example of Gothic Revival church architecture with bi-chrome (dark brown and cream) brickwork. Although the architect is unknown, it is said the builder was asked to 'make the church blend nicely with the school building across the road'.
  • The church had a very pretty facade. Delicate carved wooden tracery on the gables echoed the decorative timber gables on the Primary School opposite, it was a warm, family-friendly and attractive place to meet for social interaction and worship. The front porch was removed in the 1950s to make way for the widening of Doncaster Road.

Comments

The Doncaster Church of Christ was founded in August 1863, and a year later erected a weatherboard church building on the present site. A brick chapel was erected in 1889 (stll used), although many additions and renovations have been carried out over the years to meet the needs of the congregation. The church celebrated its 150th anniversary in 2013. More historical information/photographs of the church/congegation are invited. Photographs uploaded 12/3/2021.
