The first Independent (later Congregational) Church services began in a private home in 1852. Regular services began on 6/2/1853 in a tent in Carpenter Street. A small wooden church building was erected in Male Street, on land donated by Mr Nicoolas Were, and opened in November 1853. Land was later purchased in a more central location in Black Street, and a wooden building was opened in October 1859. To meet the needs of the growing congregation, the present brick structure was erected and opened on 2/12/1875. It was renovated and rededicated in 1991/2.
