St George's Anglican Church

The St George's Anglican Church, Sorell is part of the Parish of South East Tasmania and the Diocese of Tasmania. By 1820 Anglican services in the district were being held in a barn, moving to the school after it was opened in 1821. Although, it was not until 10/6/1825, that the Rev W Gerrard was appointed to the parish as the chaplain. The first church building was consecrated on 7/5/1828 by the Ven Archdeacon Thomas H Scott. The building was erected to hold 600 persons, with accommodation for prisoners. By 1831 the poor quality of its construction and foundations became evident, needing ongoing maintenance, and leading to a decision to demolish and rebuild in 1874. Action on this decision was delayed, resulting in the building being declared unsafe in 1879. This lead to the services being held in the Sorell Presbyterian Church, until the rebuilding was completed in 1884. Materials from the original building were used in the rebuilding. The rebuilt/present church building was consecrated by Bishop Sandford on 11/6/1884. A cemetery is located beside the church.
