Within five years of Beaconsfield's great gold reef being unearthed in 1877, it supported Tasmania's largest population outside Hobart and Launceston. Zealous fundraising included sewing guilds, doll stalls, fancy stalls, concerts, teas, bazaars and socials, epitomising the spirit of a self sufficient community.
