The St John the Evangelist Catholic Church, Richmond is in the Parish of Richmond and the Diocese of Hobart. The original church building was opened on 31/12/1837, having been erected on land donated by Mr John Cassidy. Earlier Catholic services having being held in his home. In 1858 significant enhancements were made to the building, including the addition of a chancel, a sacristy and a tower and spire. The augmented building being opened on 15/2/1859. Over the years other additions and maintenance have been carried out on the building, including modifications to the tower/spire due to deterioration, and to meet the needs of the congregation. St John's is also the oldest continuously used Catholic Church in Australia. A cemetery adjoins the church. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited.
