The former St John's Lutheran Church, Cambrai (formerly known as Rhine Villa) closed about 1968, when the congregation merged with Hope Lutheran Church in Cambrai, and the property was sold (1971). The church had been part of the SA-NT District of the Lutheran Church of Australia, following the merger in 1967 of the Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia (of which St John's was a member) with the United Evangelical Lutheran Church of Australia, to form the Lutheran Church of Australia. The church building had been erected on land donated for a church and school by Gottlob Laube, and opened about 1910. This church replaced the original St John's which had been opened in Rheinthal in 1876. It was a pine and pug structure, which was also used as a school. Both the church and the school closed in 1911, when the congregation moved to the new church building, St John's Cambrai. This building is now part of the Cambrai Agricultural Museum. A cemetery was also established at Rheinthal, beside the original church building, which has been demolished. More historical information/photographs of the former church/congregation are invited.
