The St Michael Catholic Church, Clare is part of the Parish of Sevenhill and the Diocese of Adelaide. The first record of a Mass being celebrated in Clare was by Fr Michael Ryan, VG in a Mr Patrick Butler's house, in December 1844. The first church building was opened and dedicated by Bishop Murphy on 6/5/1849, who chose St Michael the  Archangel as the patron of the church, not St Patrick. Growth in parishioner numbers, due to the prosperity of the area from the Burra copper mines, led to plans for a larger church building being drawn up and to a foundation stone being laid in 1873. Over the next period, the need for substantial funds to erect the church building and the drift of people from the area made fundraising difficult. This required a substantial fundraising effort with the church building not opened until 28./1/1883. The church building was opened by now Bishop Reynolds of Adelaide. The original St Michael's is now located in the grounds of St Joseph's School. [Sourced from; https://www.sevenhillrivertonmanooraparishes.org.au/st-michaels-church].
