The Clare Uniting Church is part of the Generate Presbytery and the Uniting Church Synod of South Australia. The history of Methodism in the district began with the Cornish miners in Burra, who began to establish activities beyond mining, bringing their strong faith with them. Initially a small chapel was built at Spring Farm outside Clare. By 1851 meetings in Clare were being held in private dwellings. A block of land was purchased by Thomas Major in 1866 and donated for the erection of the first chapel, which was opened in July 1857 (now privately owned). As the chapel soon became too small, plans were made for a larger building next to the chapel, which was opened on 17/3/1867. A vestry was added in 1877 and a gallery in 1883.
