A plaque records: In commemoration of - Arthur Felix Holmes 1895 ~ 1945 - Eleanor Elsie Holmes (nee Irwin) 1901 ~ 1993 - and their youngest son - Gordon Felix Holmes - 1938 ~ 2009 - in whose memory these gates were donated by his loving family. The St John the Evangelist Anglican Church, Cairins is a Ministry Unit of the Diocese of North Queensland. The present church building was dedicated on 23/1/1927, and is the oldest church building in Cairns. It replaced an earlier wooden structure in Abbott Street, which was destroyed by a cyclone in 1920. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited.
