St Joseph's Catholic Cathedral

The St Jospeh's Catholic Cathedral, Allenstown is the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Rockhampton, the diocese having been created about 1882. The land for the cathedral was acquired about 1877, although the building was not erected/opened until 15/10/1899. As the building was not finished at the time of opening,  the east end was closed off until it was completed and consecrated on 22/5/1982. Early Masses in Rockhampton were celebrated from about 1862 in the Court House, the first St Joseph's church being erected at cnr Derby St & Alma St, and opened on 4/1/1863.
