Foundation Stone Notes: | A foundation stone was laid by Prime Minister, Robert Menzies in 1954. The text on the foundation stone is not known. Information/photographs are invited. An information board records: John Flynn Memorial Church - This church was built to honour a great Australian. Rev John Flynn worked tiressly for 40 years to improve the lives of people in the bush. - He was called 'Flynn of the Inland'. His practical Christianity made him a legend in his own lifetime and earned the respect of people who might never go to church. - Prime Minister Robert Menzies laid the foundation stone for the church in 1954. It was officially opened on 5 May 1956. - Under Flynn's leadership, the Australian Inland Mission
The School of the Air and the Old Timers Village are also products of his vision for the inland. John Flynn died in 1951. His ashes were interred near Mount Gillen, on the western side of town. They were placed under a boulder from the Devils Marbles. In 1999 it was replaced with a stone chosen by Arrernte men. |

The Alice Springs Uniting Church is part of the Uniting Church of Australia Northern Synod. The church building was erected by the Presbyterian Church, as the John Flynn Memorial Church, in the mid 1950s. It was named in honour of the Rev John Flynn. A pioneer of the Royal Flying Doctor Service and a Minister in the Australian Inland Mission of the Presbyterian Church. The address at the opening dedication was given by the Governor General of Australia, Sir William Slim. The church became part of the Uniting Churh in 1977.
