The St Michael's Catholic Cathedral, Wagga Wagga is the seat of the Bishop of the Diocese of Wagga Wagga. The first church building was erected and opened in the late 1850s, when the church was part of the Diocese of Yass. To meet the needs of the growing congregation a new church building was opened and consecrated on 2/10/1887. The Diocese of Wagga Wagga was established on 28/7/1917, with the first Bishop, the Rev J W Dwyer, consecrated on 13/10/1918. Work then began to transform the existing parish church into the Diocesan Cathedral. This required a considerable amount of work as the church building essentailly only consisted of a nave. The new cathedral for the Diocese was opened and blessed by the Apostolic Delegate to Australia, Archbishop Bartholomeo Cattaneo on 22/3/1925, accompanied by the Archbishops of each capital city. More historical information/photographs of the cathedral/congregation are invited. Photographs upladed 25/8/2023.
