The former St Peter's Catholic Church, New Italy was destroyed in a cyclone in 1945.

An Italian community arrived in New Italy in 1883, after a hazardous voyage, which they had been encouraged to undertake, by being mislead as to opportunities, and had to be rescued from Noumea by the NSW Government. A story worth seeking out. After their arrival they erected a timber church building about 1887. A new St Peter's church building was erected in 1907. It was unfortunately destroyed in a cyclone in 1945, along with the All Saints Catholic Church, and much more in Woodburn. It was not rebuilt. The St Peter' s Crucufix is today located behind the altar in the St John's Catholic Church, Evans Head (see photograph). The bell was also recovered, and is now located at the Woodburn Primary School. More historical information/photographs of the former church/congregation are invited. Photograph uploaded 25/2/2021.
