The St Maroun's Maronite Cathedral, Redfern is the main church of the Maronite Catholic Eparchy of St Maron of Sydney, in the Maronite Eparchy of Australia, New Zealand and Oceania. The cathedral is the seat of the Epoch, and the administration is overseen by the Catholic Archdiocese of Sydney. The first Maronite priests arrived in Sydney in 1893, and in 1894 services were being conducted in leased premises in Raglin St., Waterloo. In 1895, a property was purchased in Elizabeth St., Redfern with construction of the original St Maroun's Church completed and consecrated on 10/1/1897. Mass celebrated at the consecration was attended by the Catholic Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Moran along with Father Yazbek and Father Dahdah. By the early 1960s the church was too small for the congregation, and the property next door was purcahsed for the erection of a new cathedral. This was achieved with the new cathedral opened and consecrated on 2/5/1965, with Mass celebrated by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Gilroy and Fateher Ziade.[Sourced from: http://www.maronite.org.au/index.php?option=com_content&view=article&id=146&Itemid=789]. More historical information/photographs of the cathedral/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 18/1/2021 & 11/8/2026.
