Comments
The St Anne's Anglican Church, Gresford is part of the Parish of Gresford/Paterson (with St Mary's, Allynbrook; St John's, Vacy and St Paul's, Paterson) in the Diocese of Newcastle. The earliest worship services in the area were held by visiting clergy in a nearby store. It had been intended that Bishop Broughton would lay the foundation stone for the first church building on 26/6/1845, but due to a dispute as to the tiltle to the site, it was postponed. The stone was left on the ground and about 1855 a wooden church building was erected on the site, and the stone was covered up. On its re-discovery, at the demolition of the wooden structure to make way for the present church building, it was repurposed and laid as the foundation stone of the pesent church building on 14/6/1898, by the Rt Rev G H Stanton, Bishop of Newcastle. The church building was consecrated on 10/11/1898 by the Bishop of Newcastle. The Church hall was originally the School of Arts Hall in Gresford which was acquired about 1926 and relocated to the church site. A cemetery containing the remains of many of the local pioneers, adjoins the church. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 21/9/2026.
