Mary Queen of Croats Catholic Church

The Mary Queen of Croats Catholic Church, Figtree is in the Parish of Campbelltown and part of the Catholic Diocese of Wollongong. The formation of a Croation community in Wollongong by the early 1960s, the ministering to the community by visiting Croatian priests from the late 1960s and a permanent priest from 1972, increased the need for a separate place of worship and culture. This resulted in the former wooden Anglican Church building, in West Wollongong, being acquired on 12/3/1976. However, it was soon too small for the communities needs, and plans for a new church building and cultural centre soon began. After some years in planning, in less than a year the small community managed to build a church, a hall and a priests residence. The church was consecrated on 29/10/1983 by Bishop Ciril Kos of Dakove and Bishop E W Murray of Wollongong¹. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited.
