The St Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, Surry Hills is part of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese of Australia, and purcahsed the current building about 1980.
The first church building on the site was for the Independent Church which began about 1855. About 1859, it changed its name to the Bourke Street Congregational Church. The first building was a portable cast iron structure, which was replaced by the current building which was opened in 1880. The Congregational church closed in the late 1930s and the building was later leased to The St Sophia Greek Orthodox Church, until they purchased it about 1980.
