An historic plaque records: Tumbulgum - St Peter's Church of England/Anglican Church 1888~2012. - The second Church of England church to be built on the Tweed was the beautiful church of St Peter at the thriving riverside town of Tumbulgum, formerly known as The Junction.

The hard work of the community was rewarded on 15 April 1888, when the church of St Peter was dedicated on its site on the corner of Bawden Street and Government Road. The Reverend Fox was so delighted with the work of the parishioners in completing the 400 pound church debt free, that he donated a brass cross and vases.

Tragedy struck on 25 November 1943 when the church was blown down and destroyed in a fierce storm. All the church furnishings were salvaged and stored., with church services being conducted in the Tumbulgum Hall. The salvaged timber was sold and a new site purchased in Riverside Drive...adjacent to the Tumbulgum Hotel.

The foundation stone for a new church was placed by Bishop Storrs on 26 September 1954 and the church was dedicated on 20 November.

The building remained the pride of those who worshipped therein for the next 58 yeras until it was...sold.

After 124 years of Anglican worship in Tumbulgum, St Peters was decommissioned on Sunday 15 April 2012.

The church was then sold and renamed Tweed River Chapel and continues to be a place of worship... [Tweed Shire Council].
