The foundation stone for the first stage of the church building was blessed and laid on 26/10/1890 by the Archbishop of Sydney, Cardinal Moran. This stone cannot now be located.

(Freeman's Journal - 2 December 1899)  "CHURCH OF BLESSED PETER CHANEL HUNTER'S HILL. His Eminence the Cardinal on Sunday, December 3, will bless the foundation-stone of the nave of Blessed Peter Chanel's Church at Hunter's Hill, Blessed Peter Chanel, a Marist Father, is, in Australasia, the first servant of God raised to the honours of Beatification."

The St Peter Chanel Catholic Church building as it stands today remains unfinished.

The first stage was opened on 11/12/1892 and the second stage on 2/6/1901.

(Freeman's Journal - 1 June 1901)  "Church Opening at Hunter's Hill. On Sunday afternoon, at 3 o'clock, his Eminence the Cardinal will bless and open the Church of Blessed Peter Chanel (the Marist missionary martyr of the South Seas) at Hunter's Hill.'
