Comments

The first St Stephen's Anglican Church, Newtown  was consecrated on 9/9/1845 by Bishop Broughton.

With a growing population, it became too small and a new St Stephen's was built on a site in the Camperdown Cemetery. The first service was held on Easter Sunday 5/4/1874, and it was officially opened on 9/4/1874. The first St Stephen's continued to be used as a church hall and Sunday Scholl until it was destroyed by fire on 16/9/1938.

(Sydney Morning Herald - 10 April 1874)   "April 9. A new Protestant Episcopal Church opened at Newtown. The Bishop of Sydney officiated. The church is a handsome stone building, with accommodation for about 800 persons, and has been erected at the cost of about £9000."

More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 27/4/2018 & 22/11/2020.
