St Francis Xavier Catholic Church

The St Francis Xavier's Catholic Church, Ashbury is in the Parish of St Francis Xavier/Ashbury and part of the Archdiocese of Sydney. The parish was established in 1928 and the first parish priest, Fr Edward McMahon, was appointed. A tent was erected for celebration of the first Mass. When a house was purchased, Mass was moved to the garage. The foundation stone for the first church building was laid in 1929, which was also used as a school. A convent was opened in 1935 for the Ursuline sisters, who were the school teachers and who had up until this time lived in a small cottage. The St Ursula's Secondary College was opened in 1939. Over the years the congregation had grown and by 1951 plans and fund raising for a new church building had began. The present church building was opened and blessed in 1955 by Cardinal Gilroy.
