A plaque on the belltower records: St Bede's Bell in service of this church since - 1862 was in 1961 set up in this tower - erected principally through the gift - of Raymond Churchin in memory of his - parents, William and Annie May Churchin - of your charity pray for them - Rev. D.F.Egan P.P. ~  Architect - Paul C. Kellett ARAIA. [note the best grammar]. Some comments suggest the huge bell was originally intended for St Mary's Cathedral, Sydney?.

A personal note received by email on 23/7/2026 from Stephen Kellett: "My father, Paul C Kellett, was the architect mentioned on the bell tower plaque. I was a child when I accompanied him on one of his visits to see the parish priest at the time of the bell tower's construction in 1961-2. My father told me that an inscription mix up had occurred in the casting of the bell in the UK and that the Braidwood bell had originally been supposed to be inscribed for St Mary's Sydney, but Braidwood, which was supposed to have been delivered a smaller bell, profited by the error, hence the large bell tower. Further, my uncle Robert McGrath, a resident of Braidwood, was for many years the bell-ringer for Sunday Mass".
