The All Saints' Anglican Cathedral, Bathurst is in the Diocese of Bathurst, and the seat of the Bishop. The first Divine Service in Bathurst was held on 7/5/1815, under a tree beside the river. Governor Macquarie was in attendance, as he had earlier proclamed the the town of Bathurst. The first church building was All Saints' Anglican Church, which was consecrated by Bishop Broughton on 14/12/1849. The diocese of Bathurst was proposed on 27/10/1865 by the Bishop of Sydney, as the population had increased greatly, particularly with the decovery of gold, and he was unable to give proper attention to the western part of his diocese. The first Bishop of Bathurst, the Rev Samuel Marsden, was installed on 4/5/1870. He was a grandson of the Rev Samuel Marsden the missionary and pioneer. The bishop then declared the former All Saints' Anglican Church, Bathurst to be his Cathedral. Plans for a new cathedral began in the early 1900s, with a foundation stone laid on 25/4/1920 by General Sir William Birdwood. However, it was decided to build a hall first and the rebuilding of the Cathedral did not commence until 1925. This is the older part of the Cathedral today. The consecration of the Cathedral Church of All Saints' and the dedication of the Chapel of St Michael and St George was held on Sunday 27/11/1927. Depression, WWII and a prolonged grought led to the original Catherdal plans never being completed. A new design was agreed in the 1960s and the Cathedral was completed on 13/8/1971. A new entrance and bell tower were completed and dedicated on 31/10/2009. More historical information/photographs of the cathedral/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 29/12/2025
