A plaque records: Christ Church Anglican Church - Bungonia - The centenary of this church - was celebrated on 24th October 1993 - by - Bishop Neville Chynoweth - 'with thanksgiving and Glory to God Almighty'. An information plaque records: Christ Church Bungonia - By 1833 the township of Bungonia had been surveyed and the Diocese of Sydney or 'Parish' of Australia beyong Liverpool ' appointed the Rev Thomas Hassall of Cobbity (the 'galloping parson', due to his having to ride his horse many hundreds of kilometres in a day to visit many scattered stations and shepherds' huts in his large parish). - Christ Church was finally completed by Bishop William Chalmers in 1893. The original church, a wooden structure built in 1841 was in Goderick Street near the foundations for a stone church designed by John Verge, partly built but abandoned. In 1865 thought was given to the erection of a new church and funds were raised. The foundation for the present church was laid in 1877 and the church opened in 1878 with a celebratory service by Puddicombe, Proctor and Fosterwanstall. The church was designed by Edmund Blacket with his brother completing the work after Blacket's death. Christ Church was heritage listed in 1999, recognising a significant architectural building. - Christ Church also represents the faith and humanity of pioneer pastors and laity, some of whom are commemorated in the twelve beautiful stained glass windows depicting the life of Christ. The caretaker for many years, Mary Jones, benefactors and parishioners Chapman and Broadhead are among thoses remembered. An unusual feature in the central window behind the altar is the depiction of Jesus as a young lad. - Associated with the church was a Parsonage and a glebe of 40 acres on the other side of Bungonia Creek. The glebe was used to grow grains, fruit and vegetables. The Parsonage, constructed by Patrick Kelly and John Curry in 1841, was the dwelling used by the parsons during their time in Bungonia. It is now a private dwelling and the glaebe is part of a heavy vehicle truck route for a quarry. |
