The St George Free Serbian Orthodox Church, Forrest since 1963 has functioned under the jurisdiction of an American Canadian Diocese (although this has been the subject of dispute over the years). Following the Second World War the first Serbian political migrants arrived in Canberra and Queanbeyan in 1949-50. The first church service was held in 1951 in the St John's Anglican Church, Canberra. Feeling the need for a religious and national life, the Serbs formed the Church school congregation of Saint George the Great Martyr on the 18/8/1955. Until 1955 when they were able to have our own church, occasional church services were held in the barracks of the former migrant camp, which was shared with the Russian and Ukrainian churches. In 1963 land was granted for the erection of a church builiding, with the building beginning in 1966. The present church building was consecrated on 18/2/1968 by His Grace, Bishop Dimitrije1. A church hall was subsequently built, along with the Draza' monument, both of which were blessed on 27/12/1969, by Bishop Dimitrije. The church ceiling and walls contain frescos, painted by Karl George Matzek, over a period of sixteen years, to 1983. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 26/10/2025.
