| Foundation Stone Notes: | A foundation stone on the larger church building records: Wesleyan - Methodist Church - April 15th 1885. An historical marker records: The first church in Port Wakefield, built in 1868 (at that time part of the Auburn circuit) the Wesleyan Chapel (smaller building) was erected by a Mr Sanders at a cost of 176 pounds on land purchased for 20 pounds. The larger building, built in 1885, became the Wesleyan Methodist Church. The porch was added as a memorial to those who died in WWI. In 1870 Port Wakefield became the head of an independent circuit which included Goyder Plains, Dalkey Hill & The Hummocks. Rev W H Rofe was the first minister to be stationed at the port and remained until 1872. A foundation stone in the porch records: In Memory of our Soldiers who served in the Great War 1914 - 1919. |
