An information board on the road beside the church records: Former St Peter's & St Stephen's - The first church to be erected was St Peter's. Since 1865 there had been moves to establish a Presbyterian Church in Monaro which led to the building of the church at Round Plain in 1870. Round Plain is some 20km from Berridale so it was not a convenient location for the townspeople. The foundation stone for a church in the town was laid in 1889 and a simple stone building was erected by local contractor Henry Hoskins. The church's name was changed to St Stephen's when it became part of the Uniting Church in 1977. - The little weatherboard hall at the rear of the church started life in the early 1950s as the modest Anglican Church of All Saints at Island Bend, an isolated Snowy camp west of Lake Jindabyne. It was built for Anglicans working on the Snowy Scheme and its moment of fame came on Sunday 10 March 1963 when Queen Elizabeth and the Duke of Edinburgh attended morning service there as part of their tour of the Snowy Scheme. - The little church was relocated to Berridale in the 1950s and was used for many years as a community hall for St Stephen's. The church and hall were transferred into private ownership in 2009. |
