A heritage plaque records: Haberfield Methodist Church in 1922. - The first Methodist church in Haberfield was established on this site in May 1908. On 26 April 1913 the minister, Dr Sellors, laid the foundation stone (shown in this photograph) for additions including a new entry vestibule and a redesigned facade following the Gothic Revival architectural style of the earlier church. Opening services in the enlarged church were held on 3 August 1913. A timber picket fence was characteristic of the Federation period in Haberfield. - The Methodist Church in Haberfield closed at the end of 1973. In the following year, St David's Presbyterian Church bought the property for $140,000 and established the Ella Community Centre with financial assistance from the Commonwealth government. During renovations in 1974-5, the foundation stone was transferred to inside the Ella Community Centre. - The Ella' was officially opened on 21 June 1975 and was named in memory of Isabella Rosina Ella, the mother of Henry Ella who donated $60,000 to help set up the centre. It is a service activity of St David's Uniting Church Parish for the people of Haberfield and the inner west of Sydney. Although the facade of the former church has been remodelled, the side elevations remain largely intact.
