A plaque at gate entrance records: Roman Catholic Church - "Our Lady Star of the Sea" - 1878 - The Catholic Church opened for worship in 1878. The building is made of local granite blocks. Mr Richard Barnes who ran the punt and store donated the land for the church. There are two stories relating to how the name was chosen. One, that whilst building the Church the river sounded like the sea; the other that it was named after the patron saint of the early settlers who travelled to Australia by ship. - In 1920 G.D. Cochran designed the unusual castellated extension. - Parishioners travelled many miles and by various means to attend Divine Services, mostly by horseback, horse and buggy or on foot. - There is a Cemetery at Boloco where many of the early settlers including Richard Barnes are buried. |
