A plaque records: A Brief History of St Joseph's Murrurunda - In 1840 Thomas Haydon donated 2 1/2 acres - for a church and cemetery - On 18th May 1841 Father Joseph Lynch (later Dean) - blessed and laid the foundation stone for a wooden - chapel and consecrated the cemetery.  The chapel was - completed in 1841. This was replaced by the current - stone building in 1860 which Arch Bishop Polding - blessed and dedicated to St Joseph on 19th February - 1860. The parish of St Joseph's Murrurundi - was established in 1869.

A plaque on the a bell frame records: Garden of Celebration - our ancestors' faith...our own journey...and - the Federation of our land. - The adjacent convent was built by Fr Finn - for The Singleton Sisters of Mercy - 1880 ~ 1970 - Foundation stone and bell from St Joseph's School - Built 1930.

A plaque records: St Joseph's Church - Murrurundi - originally opened with the rite of simple blessing - on - 19th February, 1860 - by - Archbishop John Bede Polding OSB - consecrated in the rite of solemn dedication - by - The Bishop of Maitland - on - 20th May, 1990. - Fr Brian Gibbons, Parish Priest.

Comments

The St Joseph's Catholic Church, Murrurundi is part of the Parish of Murrurundi and the Diocese of Maitland-Newcastle. The present church building was opened on 19/2/1860 by Archbishop Polding, and replaced an earlier wooden chapel erected in 1841. The church celebrated its sesquicentenary in 2010.
