The St Mary Star of the Sea Catholic Cathedral is in the Diocese of Darwin. The cathedral church is the seat of the Bishop of Darwin. The earliest record of Catholic activity in the NT was on 15/7/1882, when two priests 'came ashore and baptised some young children of Catholic families'. Following this initial contact  four priests in September 1882 established a Mission, and eventually built a church on the site of the current Presbytery. After World War II there was need for a larger church building. This led to the erection of the present cathedral, which was built as a Memorial Cathedral, and opened on 19/8/1962 by Bishop O'Loughlin. The church building was consecrated on 20/8/1972 by Bishop O'Loughlin. It was erected as a memorial to those servicemen, Australian, American, British and Dutch who lost their lives during WWII.
