Tarlo Presbyterian Church - Former

The former Tarlo Presbyterian Church, Tarlo closed about 1912, and the property was sold (1918). The first Presbyterian church building was a wooden structure, erected on land donated by Mr William Jamieson, of Tarlo Station. It was built as an outreach of the Goulburn Presbyterian Church, and was opened on 17/10/1860 by the Rev William Ross of Goulburn. By 1871 the building had deteriorated and plans for a new church building began. This included obtaining two land grants for a new church site and funding for the rubble stone structure. This new church building was opened on 14/4/1873 by the Rev S F Mackenzie. By 1900 the Tarto population was declining as was the congregation numbers and activities. The church property was sold on 21/9/1918 to Edward Cunningham, who transferred it to the Catholic Bishop of Goulburn and others as Trustees. After renovations the new Catholic Church was opened by the Rev Dr J Gallagher, Bishop of Goulburn, on 2/10/1921. It was closed in 1956, due to a declining congregation, with the property sold in 1971, after which it was used for storage and as an animal shelter¹. More historical information/photographs of the former church(es)/congregation(s) are invited.
