The foundation stone for the present church building was laid on 5/12/1869 by Bishop Goold. The text on the foundation stone is not known. Information/photographs are invited.

A heritage plaque records: St Augustine's - Church - This bluestone Gothic church designed by T A Kelly and built by Reid & Stewart in 1869/70, replaced a timber church built in 1853. The tower was extended in 1936 and the sacristy added in 1965. The Church Hall, designed by J B Denny in 1880/1, housed St Augustine's School, established in 1853. The Church has long been associated with many national groups especially through its Centre for seamen.

The St Augustine's Catholic Church, Melbourne is in the Parish of Melbourne Bourke St. and the Archdiocese of Melbourne. It is the second oldest Catholic Church in the city of Melbourne. The first St Augustine's church building was erected about 1853. The present building was erected about 1870 to cater for the overflow from the St Francis Catholic Church.
