The pastoral care of the St Francis of Assisi's Catholic Church, Paddington was entrusted to the Franciscans in 1879, and was established as a separate parish in 1887.
The 1889/90 church building was opened on 22/6/1890 by Cardinal Moran, although only the nave had been completed. Plans to complete the building were abandoned, as it would have been too small to cater for the congregation if it had been finished to the original design. A new bulding was planned, the foundation stone of which was laid on 29/7/1917, to be erected in two stages. Stage one consisted of the sanctuary, transepts and sacristries. It was opened on 16/6/1918. However, due to cost stage two was not built, and the present church building consists of the nave from the 1890 building and the sanctuary etc for the 1918 building. Over the years more alterations have been undertaken, including those needed to facilitate changes flowing from the second Vatican Council.
