St Michael's Ukrainian Catholic Church, Queanbeyan East is part of the Ukrainian Catholic Eparchy of Saints Peter and Paul of Melbourne, within the territory of the Catholic Archdiocese of Canberra & Goulburn. The first Ukrainian arrivals in Canberra-Queanbeyan in 1948 were largely 'political refugees, workers deported to Germany during WWII'. By the early 1980s, around 1200 Ukrainian-Australians had made the ACT and Queanbeyan their home. They held their church services in the St Gregory's Catholic Church, nearby, but with the desire for their own spiritual space. The present church building, erected mainly by volunteer labour, was consecrated on 14/5/1967, by the Bishop of the Ukrainian Catholics in Australia, NZ and the Oceanic, the Most Rev Ivan Prasko1. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 20/9/2019.
