A plaque records: St Thomas More's War Memorial Church - was built by - Reverend Father B P Shanahan PP - who died 27th February 1971. - The church was blessed and opened by - The Most Rev J Freeman DD  - Bishop of Armidale - on 1st August 1971 - Terence A Daly & Associates ~ Architects - Very Reverend Monsignor C A Fisher ~ Parish Priest - M J and J A O'Dell ~ Builder.

The St Thomas More Catholic Church, Werris Creek is part of the Parish of Werris Creek (with Queen of the Angels, Coroona) and the Diocese of Armidale. The present church building was opened and dedicated on 1/8/1971 by the Most Rev J Freeman, Bishop of Armidale. It replaced an earlier St Thomas the Apostle Church building, which had been erected about 1914. An earlier building erected about 1886, was closed and sold when the 1914 building was erected.
