The St Francis Xavier Catholic Church, Ballina is part of the Parish of Ballina and the Diocese of Lismore. The present church building was opened in 1962 by Bishop Farrelly. It is the third St Francis church. The first was opened in 1881 by Bishop Torreggiani and the second in 1901. The earliest Catholic activity in Ballina was in 1853, when Fr William McGinty visited Ballina by boat. Annual visits appeared to have been conducted until about 1862, after which Fr J Murphy was appointed the first priest-in-charge of a parish encompassing Coffs Harbour, Tenterfield, the Tweed and Ballina1. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 18/11/2018.
