A plaque records: This gate formed part of the original church fence erected in 1885. It was restored by the Catholic community of Mallala to commemorate the Centenary of Federation. The St Malachy's Catholic Church, Mallala is part of the St Mary of the Cross MacKillop/Northern Light Parish, (with St Vincent de Paul, Port Wakefield; St Andrew's, Balaklava: Rose of Lima, Kapunda; St Benedict's, Freeling; Our Lady of the Nativity, Hamley Bridge and Sts John & Paul, Tarlee) in the Archdiocese of Adelaide. The first church building was a small chapel erected on land donated by Mr Peter Farrelly, and opened for worship and blessed on 19/11/1882 by Fr Byrne of Gawler. However, by 1912 it had become too small for the growing congregation and plans to renovate and enlarge the building were undertaken. The re-opening and blessing was held on 14/3/1913 by the Very Rev T F O'Neil PP of Gawler. The church building was completely renovated in 2015, funded by a bequest from Monica Farrelly1.
