The Alliance Church, Calwell is part of The Christian and Missionary Alliance of Australia, an evangelical denomination with an Australian representation of some 50 churches. Internationally, the Alliance includes some 7,500 churchres. It was established at Old Orchard, Maine USA in 1887, by Dr A B Simpson1. The Calwell congregation was a church plant from the Woden Valley Alliance Church, and held its first service in October 1990, in a college campus. Land for a church building was acquired about 1997 with its own building being opened and dedicated on 14/2/1999.
The Alliance Church is currently worshipping with the Brindabella Baptist Church, at the Alliance building, under the name Southgate Christian Community. It is a collaborative worship and ministry venture between the two churches, which began in 2014. The Brindabella Baptist Church, was a church planted in 1991, and is part of the Baptist Union of NSW & ACT.

Founded in 1887 at Old Orchard, Maine, by Dr. Albert B. Simpson, a Canadian-born Presbyterian minister, the C&MA was originally established as an evangelical foreign missionary organisation that received support from an alliance of Christians from several denominations and nationalities.
