A heritage plaque records: "St John's Church of England - St John's was the second Anglican Church built in the original town. The foundation stone for the first church, St John's the Evangelist, was laid in 1862 and the weatherboard and shingle roofed building was completed the following year. Nearly forty years later, in 1906, and other foundation stone was laid for a more substantial church and the old one became the Sunday School. Designed by local architect Donald Cochrane in the Gothic style it has a chancel, nave, vestry and porch. The church is constructed of local granite and is one of Monaro's 21 stone churches built from the middle of the 19th century to the middle of the 20th cemntury. The church features a handsome octagonal tower with spire and some beautiful stained glass windows. One of the finest is the St George window, a memorial to the fallen soldiers of World War I. - The last service was held in the church in April 1956 and immediately after volunteers started dismantling the building stone by stone, meticulously numbering each one. The church was relocated to its new site, under the direction of architects Fowler Mansfield & Macluran and faithfully rebuilt to its original form. Less than a year later the first service was held in the rebuilt church on 12 March 1957. - One apprentice who worked on building the 1906 church was the contractor employed to undertake the rebuilding fifty years later. - Adaminably and Eucumbene Heritage Trails. |
