An information board records: The Church of St Mary the Virgin - In 1845 Bishop Broughton, the first Bishop of Australia, accompanied by Rev Price, was touring the Monaro district, after visiting the fledgling town of Cooma, travelled south and stayed with the Brooks family. Here the Bishop conducted a service and encouraged Brooks to build a small chapel near his homestead. - In 1849 a stonemason named Gray commenced work, financed by the Brooks family. Construction progressed very slowly and stopped completely when Richard Brooks died in 1855. - During the late 1850s a trio of masons, Mawson, Potter and Scarlett, recommenced work. This final stage of the building was paid for by public subscription and people of all denominations contributed.  By 1860 the church was ready for services but was not completed until 1862. In 1867 it was consecarted by Bishop Thomas of Goulburn.
