Foundation Stone Notes: | (Empire - 13 November 1871) "ST. STEPHEN'S CHURCH, NEWTOWN. -- THE FOUNDATION-STONE. ON Saturday afternoon the foundation-stone of St. Stephen's Church, Newtown, was laid by his Excellency Earl Belmore. The new church is to be built within the ground of the cemetery. The architect is Mr. E. T. Blackett, the contractors Messrs. Dowling and Kirkham. A model of the church was exhibited on the ground. It will be a spacious and picturesque building. The Rev. Robert Taylor is the incumbent, Messrs. C. Rolleston, Crane, and W. G. Sedgwick churchwardens. The formal text of the foundation stone is not known. |

The Notice Board records that St Stephen's Anglican Church, Newtown was established in 1845. The present building was designed by Edmund Blackett and completed in 1874.
(Sydney Morning Herald - 10 April 1874) "April 9. A new Protestant Episcopal Church opened at Newtown. The Bishop of Sydney officiated. The church is a handsome stone building, with accommodation for about 800 persons, and has been erected at the cost of about £9000."
