The St Francis of Assisi Catholic Church, Harrietville is part of the Parish of Bright and part of the Diocese of Sandhurst. The first church building at Harrietville was St Mark's, erected on a site in Mill Road, which was dedicated in 1873. In May 1884 the building was moved to a more central site on the eastern side of the Great Alpine Road, just north of the Public Hall. At this site it was known as St Patrick's. The building deteriorated and by 1914 it was demolished. Fund raising for a new building was begun. This resulted in the 1865 Chapel from the Lower Flat gold settlement on the Buckland River, in the Buckland Valley, being relocated in about 1922 to a new site in Harrietville. After essential repairs it became the St Francis of Assisi church in 1923. Further repairs and maintenance were carried out in 1981, with the completion of the restoration being celebrated in a Massa conducted by Fr E Loorham on 25/1/19811. More historical information/photographs of the church/congregation are invited. Photographs uploaded 9/8/2019.
