Foundation Stone Notes: | The foundation stone was laid on 12/3/1849 by Archbishop J B Polding, of Sydney. The text on the foundation stone is not known. Information/photographs are invited. Church Notice Board records: Est. 1849. An information board records: St Gregory's is the oldest standing church in Queanbeyan. The building was designed... by Sydney Architect, John Bell, in 1847... On 12 March 1849, the Archbishop of Sydney, John Bede Polding laid the foundation stone, naming the church in honour of the early Medieval Pope, St Gregory the Great. ... Construction of the rubblestone church was overseen by the priest, Father Michael Kavanagh, with the builder Daniel McCloskey completing it in 1850. The church served as the town's Catholic school from 1852 until 1857 when a school building - now demolished - was erected in the church grounds. A centuary later, the church inaugurated services in their languages for parishioners from non-English backgrounds. In 1957 St Gregory's was superseded by St Raphael's as Queanbeyan's parish church. |

The church building was opened in 1850, and is the oldest church in Queanbeyan. It was superseded as Queanbeyan's parish church in 1957, by St Raphael's Catholic Church in Lowe Street (see separate entry - 2620).
