The Notice Board records the church was 'Erected 1882' A plaque records: To the glory of God - St Peter's Church - Nimmitabel - was consecrated at the - 125th Anniversary Service - 19th October, 2003 - By The Rt Rev'd George Browning - Peter Haylock, Gaile Fitzgerald, - Leon Weston, Wardens - Rev'd Kevin Stone, Rector A heritage plaque records: St Peter's Anglican Church. - In 1877 a committee was formed to arrange for the building of a Church of England in Nimmitybelle. - The architect was Rev Richard Leigh. - Tenders were called in 1877 and were advertised in the 'Monaro Mercury' in January 1878. - The successful tenderer being Joseph McKee. - The foundation stone ws laid in Oct 1878. - The successful tenderer being Mr Joseph McKee. - The foundation stone was laid in Oct. 1878. - The building was made of local basalt stones and was completed in Sept 1882. - The rool was originally shingles. At a later date the shingles were replaced with corrigated iron. - Donations were received from parishioners to cover expenses. - The first clergymen were Archdeacon Druitt 1878~1890 and Rev Zillman 1885~1886. - In 1956 the ceiling was replaced and in 1996 the roof was replaced. - The church stands as a memorial to the Anglican pioneers of Nimmitabel. |
