Heritage plaque records: St John's Church - Whitton became part of the Leeton Parish in 1944, however Whitton was a Parish in its own right dating back before 1890. This was before the township of Leeton was developed and Whitton and Narrandera were important trading pastoral centres, prior to the irrigation development the church was served by Narrandera and it was noted in the year book of 1891, 'That much energy was displayed by Parishioners in obtaining a Priest to reside there'. - The first minister was the Reverend G R F Nobbs who was a Norfolk Islander and a descendant of Fletcher Christian of Mutiny on the Bounty fame. The Riverina Diocesan records show that the Reverend Nobbs was liscensed by the Bishop of Riverina to be a reader in the District of Narrandera in 1890 and was later ordained. - From other sources of information Reverend Nobbs lived in the cottage adjacent to the church until the Rectory was built in 1898. (The Rectory still stands today behind the church) - Unfortunately there is no record available as to when the church in Whitton was built, it would appear that it was 1890 or 1891. - The last minister to live in the Rectory was Reverend Maurice Waugh, who was minsiter of Whitton, Barellan and Yenda between 1937 and 1945. In 1941 he was finally able to join the Army as a Chaplain, previously he had been rejected because of a hearing problem. - He was killed while serving in New Guinea at Lai in 1945. The Church still operates regular services [2005].
